We were so excited to see our first ballet together! I bought the tickets a couple of months ago and have been counting down the days to our fun, date-night, ballet excursion. I mean how many women can say their husband actually wants to go see a ballet??? Blessed is an understatement here. Sometimes I can’t believe I am with someone that actually enjoys the same things I do! I get to enjoy concerts, chic flicks, books and fairy tale movies on a daily basis WITH my husband.

We made it to the theater super early and waited in anticipation for the doors to open. We chatted excitedly as the minutes clicked by. FINALLY, the doors flung open, and we made our way into the theater. “Oh gosh,” I gasped as we climbed our way up 4 flights of stairs to our assigned seats. I kept thinking, man either these are amazing seats, or we just got ripped off and won’t be able to see anything. Alas, it was the latter of the two. I almost cried when I realized we literally had the WORST seats in the entire auditorium. And I’m not being dramatic here, they were the 2 seats on very side end at the top of the auditorium. We had to crane our necks over the ledge whilst somehow managing not to plummet to our death.

The ballet was probably a beautiful, breathtaking experience, but we will never know. The dances were viewed from a completely vertical view as we looked down on the seemingly tiny ballet dancers. Oh, for sure, their bright costumes were amazing, the props were cool, the atmosphere felt ethereal, but we couldn’t SEE it. So that made for a quite lackluster experience. That’s when I realized the value of a good seat.

Isn’t this just like life? It’s not that our lives aren’t good, and we aren’t blessed, we just have a crappy seat sometimes, so everything looks less amazing, or just downright terrible. The difference is that in a spiritual sense, our seats are never really bad. It’s our perspective that needs work. We are looking at things wrong, not from a heavenly plane, but from an earthly plane. God doesn’t give any of us cheap seats. Sometimes we are sitting in places that we weren’t assigned to.

God doesn’t give any of us cheap seats.

What a revelation! I love what Ephesians 2:6-7 says:

And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

Once I finally stopped being angry about how terrible my seats were at the ballet, I actually started to enjoy the beautiful dances and let myself slip away for a few moments. Enraptured by the magnificent display of artistry, and dare I say, almost perfection, I found myself feeling like I was in heaven for just a split second. Once I let go of where I thought I should be sitting, I could just enjoy what was right in front of me.

Oh friends, my prayer for all of us is that we would just let go of where we think we should be sitting, standing, etc. and just embrace the beauty of the moment we are in. Because the reality is that we are seated with Christ in heavenly places, and nothing can ever take that away from us. We have the best view in the world because we can see things the way HE sees them, which is true and right. It’s not always comfortable here on this earth, I mean it hardly is ever comfortable here, if we are being honest! That’s why we must consistently bring ourselves back to the realities of heaven and our citizenship there.

I pray blessings over you and the ability to see where you are seated!
